WATCH: Man has close encounter with lightning strike

GAINESVILLE, Fla.– Lightning is often the greatest hazard posed by thunderstorms in the summertime.

The strongest lightning strikes can have a peak charge of 300,000 amperes and one billion volts.

The video above, posted to YouTube by Hollin Hoffman shows a powerful lightning strike during a thunderstorm in Gainesville, Florida, on Sunday, July 5.

It is unclear whether or not any injuries were caused by the lightning strike.

As of Wednesday July 8, 17 people have been killed in the U.S. by lightning this year. Most recently, a 12-year-old girl was killed after being struck near Fort Morgan while on vacation.
