If your weekend plans involve being outdoors today, you’ll want to keep an eye on the weather and have Live Alert 19 handy; a secondary wave of heavy rain showers are moving through and will continue to do so for the rest of Saturday evening.
Although forecast guidance indicated that severe weather was possible for north Alabama this afternoon and evening, the atmosphere remained more stable — or less favorable for thunderstorms — and the severe weather threat is waning for the Tennessee Valley.
However, further south and east of the Valley, the atmosphere is more unstable (which means it is more favorable for stronger storms). As a result, the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of eastern Alabama under a *SLIGHT RISK* of severe storms for Saturday night. The main impacts from these storms will be gusty winds (strong enough to down trees and power lines) as well as 1 inch hail.
In addition, lightning and heavy downpours will be an issue. Remember, if you can hear thunder you are close enough to be hit be lightning, so head indoors if storms develop nearby!
How To Maneuver Storms Saturday: Days like today, when the storms will be on-and-off most of the day, are perfect to have Live Alert 19 downloaded to your smart phone. You can use this to watch the radar and receive alerts on nearby rain, lightning, and warnings. You can also program Live Alert 19 to work based on your location, so if you are traveling in or out of the Valley, you can stay ahead of storms that are located throughout the region.
Rain totals vary depending on where heavy rain bands set up. This one output shows the heavier rain setting up across the southeastern counties. This is correct with the placement and orientation of the frontal boundary along with the afternoon heating. Some spots could get a little more if heavy storms set up over your neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
Look for another round of heavy storms next week as well. Wednesday and Thursday could set up for more active storms for the Tennessee Valley. Some of those could be strong or severe as well. Unfortunately the finer details won’t come into view for another couple of days.
