Results from VORTEX-SE deployment during Thursday’s severe weather

As severe thunderstorms pushed through the Tennessee Valley last Thursday, participants within the VORTEX-SE tornado research project seized the opportunity to observe the turbulent weather as it affected the region.

VORTEX-SE comprises of 20 different schools and research organizations, one of which includes the University of Alabama Huntsville's Severe Weather Institute - Radar and Lightning Laboratories (SWIRLL). SWIRLL serves as the coordination and communication center for all involved in the research project.

SWIRLL dispatched their mobile radar to Courtland to sample the atmosphere before the arrival of Thursday afternoon's storms.

Later that evening, they had to consider both experimental operations as well as their own safety as a tornado-warned storm approached southwestern Huntsville -- right for UAH. Thankfully, the storm did not produce a tornado in Madison county, though the researchers were perfectly located to observe the atmospheric conditions of the supercell thunderstorm.

Below is a quick recap of the data and observations collected by VORTEX-SE on March 31, 2016. VORTEX-SE is ultimately supported by the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), which details the goals and operations of the research project throughout the lifetime of the research project.
