Lightning deaths reach nine year high

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The number of lightning deaths in 2016 has reached a near decade high, according to the National Weather Service.

35 people have been killed by lightning strikes in the United States since January 1.

The most recent lightning deaths occurred on September 6 in Wisconsin and Michigan. Two lightning deaths have occurred in Alabama this year; one in Lawrence County and the other happened on Redstone Arsenal.

Florida leads the nation in lightning deaths this year. New York and Louisiana rank second for most number of lightning deaths in 2016.

In the last decade, the most number of lightning deaths to occur in a single year was 48 in 2006. The fewest lightning deaths occurred in 2013; 23 fatalities were reported that year.
