Alabama has fourth highest rate of December tornado touchdowns

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– In the cold season, severe weather and tornadoes become more likely in the southeast United States and along the immediate Gulf Coast.

Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas rank in the top five of states with the most tornado touchdowns in the month of December.

Between 1950 and 2013, 189 tornadoes touched down in the Lone Star state. Mississippi had 154 twisters touch down; Louisiana had 126. Alabama ranks fourth with 124 tornado touchdowns occurring in December. 116 tornadoes touchdown across Arkansas during that time period.

When looking at stronger tornadoes in the month of December (EF2/F2 or higher), Alabama ranks first between 1950 and 2011.

A few notable tornado events in the month of December in Alabama include the Christmas Day outbreak in 2012 and the F4 tornado which hit Tuscaloosa on December 16, 2000.
