Protests continued in Decatur Monday after Decatur police shot and killed Stephen Perkins early Friday following an incident over a possible vehicle repossession. The State of Alabama and the plaintiffs who successfully sued to redraw the state’s congressional map will be in court in Birmingham on Tuesday. A federal three-judge panel found the map drawn by the Alabama Legislature in 2021 and again in 2023 appears to violate the Voting Rights Act and ordered a special master to develop three alternate maps, with one to be selected as the replacement for the 2024 elections.
For the first time in more than three years, people with Federal student loans will need to make a payment this month. Payments were paused amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to give people a financial break. However, the pause officially ended on October 1st.
