HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – It’s a moment many developers and the public have been eagerly anticipating for months.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and officials with the city’s Urban Development Department are expected to announce what will come of the old Holiday Inn property in downtown Huntsville.

Past city leaders have suggested it may be a mixed use development with retail, office and residential space.

Officials will make the plans specific and final during a news conference at 2:00 p.m.

The Holiday Inn closed its doors in December of 2013 and then liquidated everything inside.

City officials say they got a huge response from developers when they asked for proposals for the property.

Some city officials say the more than six-acre site is one of the most popular ever to be made available in downtown Huntsville because of its location right across from the Von Braun Center and Big Spring Park.
