Imagine working for an entire year to save up for a family road trip to Six Flags only to wake up and have it all taken away.

For one Huntsville family that was the horrible reality when they woke up Wednesday morning.

The family set a goal to collect enough cans to turn in for money to cover the trip's cost. They had collected enough and stored them in the backyard in bags to go celebrate the boys' birthdays at Six Flags when thieves hit. Sometime during the night the family tells WHNT News 19 someone robbed the family of their cans, leaving them heartbroken and looking for answers.

Wanda Akukwe said they collected the cans from friends, at her work and on the side of the road.

“I was trying to teach the kids that if they want something they need to work for it and nothing in life is free,” Akukwe said.

Thieves got away with about 100 bags of cans, leaving only a few behind.

“When I looked outside and saw all of those cans gone, at first I just cried then I was like I won't be able to take the kids to Six Flags,” Akukwe added. “All of our hard work, I guess we did it for someone else."
