HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Formaldehyde is back at the forefront for Lumber Liquidators. The previously sold Chinese flooring is deemed unhealthier than previously thought — and consumers are at a loss about what to do.

Dean Cosby had Lumber Liquidators laminate flooring installed in his Rogersville home in October of 2014. When he heard about the formaldehyde alert in May of 2015, he called the company and verified his flooring was included in the toxic batch from China.

“My wife is in here 24/7 and she’s had respiratory issues real bad after we installed this floor,” said Dean Cosby.

A formaldehyde home test at the Cosby house indicated five times more than what’s considered safe by the World Health Organization.

“My thinking was… well, Lumber Liquidators… they will come in, take this up and replace it,” said Cosby.

But that didn’t happen. Instead, Lumber Liquidators issued another test. And after waiting two months to hear the result, Dean got this:

“They had orders from Lumber Liquidators to not release those results to anyone but Lumber Liquidators,” said Dean.

So for now, it’s a waiting game, with no end in sight for the Cosby family. And now, there’s even more reason to be concerned.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated the risk for people who purchased the China-made flooring, saying the risk of cancer is three times more likely than it had calculated earlier this month.

The CDC’s website has information and several steps on how to reduce exposure to formaldehyde.

To be clear, Lumber Liquidators suspended sales of all laminate flooring supplied from China in May of 2015. They say the CDC report only represents the previously sold laminate flooring and they are currently safe and compliant.

We called the flooring company to get some answers for Dean.  A company spokesman said Lumber Liquidators is looking into the matter and will follow-up with both WHNT News 19 and the Cosby family ASAP.
