UNA’s Boughner Named NCBWA Region Pitcher of the Year

PENSACOLA, Fla. — University of North Alabama junior pitcher Chad Boughner of Florence, Ala., has been named South Region Pitcher of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and is one of three Lions named to the All-South Region team.
 
Boughner, who finished the 2012 season with a 10-5 overall record and 115 strikeouts in 114.2 innings pitched, was the only Lion selected for first-team all-region honors by the NCBWA. Among the reciords set by Boughner this season are UNA records for starts in a season, starts in a career, strikeouts in a game, season and career and innings pitched in a season. He is also tied for the most wins in school historywith 25.
 
UNA senior second baseman Michael Schmidt of Powder Springs, Ga., and sophomore shortstop Josh Carpenter of Harvest, Ala., were second-team All-South Region picks. Schmidt hit .377 this season with seven home runs, 39 runs batted in and 56 runs scored. He led the Gulf South Conference with 42 walks and had an impressive .482 on base percentage, to go with 25 stolen bases and 124 total bases. A two-time first-team All-GSC pick, Schmidt ranked among the league leaders in virtually every offensive categories this season. 
 
Carpenter, a two-time All-GSC pick at shortstop, hit .313 this season with 37 runs scored and 38 runs batted in. He started all 57 games at short for UNA this season. 
 
Boughner was previously selected first-team All-South Region by Daktronics and Schmidt was a second-team Daktronics All-South Region pick.
