UNA Downs Kingsville 49-17

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama raced to a 21-0 lead in the first nine minutes of the game and rolled to a 49-17 rout of Texas A&M-Kingsville at Braly Stadium. The win, UNA’s third straight, ups the Lions record to 4-2 overall. Kingsville falls to 2-4 with its fourth straight loss.

North Alabama used a balanced offensive attack in the win, rushing for 121 yards and passing for a season-high 245. The Javelinas gained 313 yards but turned the ball over three times.

North Alabama took the opening kickoff and scored five plays later. The Lions then added two more scores for a 21-0 lead with 6:16 left in the first period. UNA led 28-10 at the half and 49-10 late in the fourth quarter before the Javelinas added a late score with12 seconds left.

UNA quarterback Luke Wingo was 13-of-17 passing for 194 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

The North Alabama defense recorded eight quarterback sacks and had 15 tackles for loss. The Lions also picked off three passes, recording one for a touchdown.

UNA took the opening kickoff and Wingo hit Korey Jones for a 42-yard gain on the first play from scrimmage. Four plays later Wingo scored on a one-yard run and Will Craig added the PAT to make it 7-0 with13:21 left in the first quarter.

The Lions drove 69 yards on eight plays on their next possession and Wingo capped the drive with a seven-yard TD pass to Diamond Simmons. Craig’s PAT made it 14-0 at 7:56 of the first quarter.

A 53-yard punt return by Philbert Martial set up UNA’s next score as he took the ball all the way back to the Javelinas four-yard line. Jacob Tucker scored two plays later and Craig’s PAT made it 21-0 at 6:16 of the first quarter.

Texas A&M-Kingsville got on the scoreboard at 14:54 of the second quarter on a 44-yard Matt Stohl field goal. A UNA fumble then set up a short Javelina TD-drive. Caleb Bedford bulled in to the end zone from the one-yard line and Stoll’s PAT made it 21-10 with just 44 seconds left in the half.

North Alabama put together a quick four-play, 50-yard TD drive before the half. Wingo passed 20-yards to Lee Mayhall for the score and Craig’s PAT made it 28-10 with nine seconds left in the half.

Wingo hit Markeldon Washington with a 10-yard touchdown pass at 5:02 of the third quarter to make it 35-10 and UNA’s Caleb Massey then picked off a Javelina pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to make it 42-10 with 4:10 left in the quarter.

A one-yard Jamarcus Goodloe touchdown run with 4:42 left in the game made it 49-10.

A 23-yard touchdown pass from TAMUK’s Bedford to Robert Armstrong with 12 seconds left to close the scoring.

North Alabama plays at Valdosta State on Oct. 26.
