UNA Baseball Suffers First Loss

LAKELAND, Fla.  – Florida Southern took a 3-0 lead after two innings and North Alabama couldn’t recover as the Lions’ baseball team suffered its loss of the season, 6-1.

Florida Southern got two runs in the first on two hits, two hit batters and a walk. Conor Szczerba then hit a solo homer in the second to make it 3-0.

North Alabama got its lone run in the third with a two-out rally. Thomas Lundborg  walked and Josh Doyle followed with a single. Eric Wilson then drove in the run with a single, but FSC starter Clay Chapman struckout Bradley Noland with runners at second and third to end the threat.

UNA managed just five hits in the game, while the Mocassins scored their six runs on 10 hits.

UNA starter Chad Boughner (0-1) went five innings, allowing three runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out eight. Jacob Westerhouse came on in the sixth and lasted just 1/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits. Brantley Claunch pitched one and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Drew Mobley pitched a scoreless eighth.

Chapman got the win for FSC, pitching seven full innings and allowing one run on five hits.

With the win, Florida Southern improved to 2-7, while UNA falls to 1-2.

The two will complete a three-game series Saturday with a double-header.
