Huntsville, Ala. – After sweeping a top 10-ranked conference rival this past weekend, the University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team earned both the GSC Player of the Week Award and GSC Pitcher of the Week Award, as Blake Massey and Andrew Busby were recognized for their strong play in the sweep the league announced this morning.
For the second time this season, Massey has earned the award, as he was also the very first player of the week honoree this year. Massey started and played in all three games this weekend, going 5-for-9 at the dish with a team-high .556 batting average. The junior hit a home run and also recorded a team-high six RBIs.
The native of Huntsville scored three runs and rocked a .889 slugging percentage. Massey has been the anchor in the nine-hole this season, playing outstanding defensively and a reliable bat at the bottom of the order. He also leads the team in RBIs this season with 33 while hitting .361.
After throwing a nine-inning complete game shutout against the seventh-ranked Argonauts, Busby was recognized as GSC Pitcher of the Week. Busby notched a career-high 12 strikeouts, including a school record eight strikeouts looking.
The native of Gardendale, Ala., simply dominated West Florida and sent UAH off into a three-game sweep and a current No. 4 ranking in the country. The senior his holding opponents to a .226 batting average this season and currently leads the conference in strikeouts with 54.
This marks the fourth and fifth time this season that UAH has taken home the conference award, which means that the Chargers have been honored more than any other school in the league this season.
The two have helped lead UAH to its highest rankings since 2002, when the team appeared at No. 2 in the land.
The Chargers will play Miles today at home at 1 p.m. and Montevallo tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM.
