VALDOSTA, Ga. — The top ranked University of North Alabama baseball team managed just six hits in dropping the opening game of a three-game road series at Valdosta State 10-2.
UNA, now 24-8 overall and 6-4 in the Gulf South Conference, took a 1-0 lead early but allowed the Blazers 10 runs on 14 hits and made three errors. WIih the win the Blazers improve to 16-10 overall and 8-2 in the GSC.
UNA starter Johnny Hornbuckle (5-4) allowed seven runs on 13 hits over just five and 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Drew Batchelor allowed just one hit but the Lions gave up three unearned runs in his two and 2/3 innings of work.
The Lions scored a run in the second inning and another in the eighth, with both scoring on wild pitches by VSU. The Blazers scored three in the second inning and added another in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth.
UNA has won all three of its previous conference series this season 2-1, and lost the opening game in two of those series. The Lions and Blazers will play a double-header Sunday beginning at noon Central.
