HOOVER — Auburn coach Gus Malzahn is the first coach in the spotlight today as the annual SEC Media Days begins.

He’ll be followed by Florida’s Jim McElwain, who did such a remarkable job in leading the Gators to the SEC East title last year, and Vanderbilt’s Derrick Mason.

Before the coaches would come to the stage, however, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey offered a state-of-the-SEC speech. He began with a confession: As elaborate as the surroundings may be, with big video boards, high-speed internet and all sorts of tricky lighting and gizmos, the microphone at the podium where he and coaches will speak is attached by duct tape.

Sankey paid tribute to the late Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt and how she “truly made a positive impact to collegiate athletics.”

Sankey noted that no SEC school is under NCAA probation.

However, he said, “We know there are two programs that have received notice of allegations from the NCAA…Our institutions are expected to handle these matters with integrity.”
