FYFFE, Ala. - The past two 2A state championship games have had one thing in common - the Fyffe Red Devils.

Fyffe capped a perfect season with the first blue map in program history in 2014.  Last year, the team came up one win short, losing 36-22 to Elba in Tuscaloosa, something senior quarterback Will Mashburn doesn't plan on going through again.

"I hate losing.  It made me sick, I mean it took forever for me to get over it.  I don't like that feeling and I don't want it again," Mashburn said.

Head coach Paul Benefield knows a thing or two about what it takes to win. The Red Devils have missed the playoffs just once in his 19 seasons as the head coach.  He has some experience to work with, returning 12 seniors, six starters on offense and five on defense.  Add that to a solid group of young talent, and Benefield thinks he has a group that can make a run at a second class 2A title in three years.

"We've got some kids that are strong, and depth on the offensive and defensive line we think will help us if we stay healthy," Benefield told WHNT News 19. "Skill people are pretty deep too.  I'm worried about our kicking game, but you know we just have a lot of kids coming back in the secondary that could help us just do the best we can."

Fyffe kicks off 2016 August 26 at home against Geraldine.
