As we gear up for the high school football season, News 19 will be previewing more than 40 of our Tennessee Valley programs in On the Road with Olivia and Claudia.

Episode one features the Madison Academy Mustangs and Randolph Raiders.

Madison Academy is coming off an impressive 9-1 regular season and a postseason run that fell short in the Class 4A semi-finals.

The Mustangs take on a few new challenges in the 2022 season like changing classifications from 4A to 3A.

This year’s team is also a younger group since Madison Academy had 17 seniors graduate last year, but head coach Bob Godsey believes this group is ready to take on the season.

“It seems like with each day we just continue to improve and they’ve absorbed things very well and quickly and of course we need that,” Godsey said. “There’s gonna be some growing pains we understand that. The good part is most of these guys have been with us 2-3 years so they kind of understand what’s going on what they’re getting into and it’s kind of their turn now. It’s time for them to step up and leave their mark on the Madison Academy tradition.”

In 2022, Randolph stays in Class 4A Region 7 where they finished second in 2021, right behind Madison Academy. The Raiders lone loss of the regular season was to the Mustangs; Randolph finished 9-1 and then made it to the second round of the postseason.

Since the end of the 2021 season, the Raiders have been hard at work prepping for this year; so what has stuck out to head coach David Lloyd as his team gets ready for that first kickoff?

“I feel like the way we’ve been attacking each day in the weight room and out here on the field we’ve had a lot of intent a lot of purpose with what we’re doing and that’s something we’ve tried to preach from last year,” Lloyd said. “Just coming in, doing things and just locking in a little better. Concentrating on the little things and just being a little more purposeful with how we do things and these guys have been great at it.”

Both programs open the season week zero on Friday, August 19 before they meet against each other in a non-region showdown in week one.
