North Alabama Starts the Year 2-0

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) - The University of North Alabama scored on five of its six offensive possessions in the first half and rolled to a 56-7 win over Langston University at Braly Stadium.

The Lions, now 2-0, scored the first four times that they touched the ball and built a 28-0 lead before allowing their first points of the season . UNA then answered with another touchdown drive to lead 35-7 at intermission.
North Alabama has scored on 12 of its 14 first half possessions this season and scored 86 unanswered points to open the season.
UNA finished the game with 327 yards rushing and 187 passing yards for 514 total yards. Langston was held to 65 yards rushing and 243 total yards.
North Alabama’s 15 touchdowns this season have been scored by 12 different players.
UNA junior Lamonte Thompson got his sixth career 100-yard rushing game with 119 yards on 10 carries. Luke Wingo was 11-of-15 passing for 110 yards and two TDs and rushed for another score.
After forcing a Langston punt, UNA drove 83 yards on its opening possession to take the lead. Quarterback Luke Wingo scored on a one-yard run and Taylor Pontius added the extra-point to make it 7-0 at 3:05 of the first quarter.
An Ixavier Triplett interception set up UNA’s next possession at the Langston 39-yard line and the Lions scored four plays later. Delvon Carpenter carried the ball four yards around the right end for the touchdown and Pontius PAT made it 14-0 at 14:02 of the second quarter.
A Darvell Harris stopped another Langston drive and back-up quarterback Jacob Tucker drove the Lions 79 yards in five plays for a score. The touchdown came on a 48-yard pass from Tucker to Hagan Scott with 11:00 left in the half. Pontius PAT made it 21-0.
Linebacker Steven Rich picked up a Langston fumble and returned it to their two-yard line where Lamonte Thompson would score on the next play. The two-yard run made it 28-0 at 10:07 of the second quarter.
Langston finally got on the board with 4:39 left in the half when Mark Thigpen hit Devon Bailey with a six-yard pass for a touchdown. Michael Ryan’s PAT cut UNA’s lead to 28-7.
A 60-yard run by Thompson set up UNA’s final score of the half. Willie Bland pulled in a two-yard pass from Wingo for the TD with 2:00 left in the half. Pontius PAT made it 35-7 at intermission.
UNA added three touchdowns in the second half. The first came on a four-yard pass from Wingo to Ryan Harper with 11:47 left in the third quarter to make it 42-7. Diamond Simmons scored on an eight-yard run with 14:01 left in the game to push it to 49-7 and freshman quarterback Jacob Thomas scored on a three-yard run to make the final count 56-7.
The Lions host Valdosta State on September 27 at 6 p.m. at Braly Stadium.
