SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The University of Alabama in Huntsville opened up the 2013 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships with an easy 12-0, five-inning win over West Georgia before falling in the first round of the winner’s bracket to West Florida by a 7-1 score on Saturday.

That loss created a meeting with North Alabama in an elimination game as the tournament format featured three games on Saturday due to rain on Friday, and the Chargers blew past UNA 8-0 in five innings to survive until Sunday here in Southaven.

The Chargers improve to 37-14 on the season as Whitney Gilbert (12-7) had two bids for no-hitters and Cortney McNett drove in eight runs on the day.

The team will take on Valdosta State on Sunday at 11 a.m. Should UAH win, it would then play the winner of Delta State and West Florida to attempt to reach the championship game.
