Huntsville Stars Lose Season Opener, 2-0

The Stars found themselves on the wrong side of an opening day pitchers duel with with Suns, as Huntsville fell to Jacksonville by a score of 2-0.


Stars LHP Dan Merklinger was the hard-pressed loser, as he fell to 0-1 on the season after giving up just two runs (both earned) in 5.1 innings pitched. The Stars opening day starter also struck out eight and retired 14 straight Suns batters from the second to the sixth inning in the process.


For Jacksonville, starting pitcher Joey O’Gara notched his first win of the season after pitching 6.2 innings of 2-hit scoreless baseball. In terms of runs, Jacksonville scored a run in the first inning on Kyle Shipworth sacrifice fly and then another run in the sixth inning on a Kyle Jansen RBI single. Jeff Bianchi and Brock Keldjgaard paced the Stars offense with two hits apiece. Game two of the five-game season opening series with Jacksonville will begin at 7:05 ET with RHP Tyler Thornburg taking the mound for the Huntsville opposing LHP Jose Alvarez.
