(CNN) — The New York City Marathon has been canceled in the midst of storm recovery efforts, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office.

The 26.2 mile race was supposed to take place Sunday.

Around 47,000 runners had been scheduled to participate in the race, which is considered one of the major running events in the world.  WHNT News 19 profiled a Madison man, Jim Clemens, earlier this week. He was preparing for the race.

Many had questioned race organizers’ decision earlier this week to keep the marathon on.  Much of the city is still flooded and without power, and the city’s transit system is not restored.
