PASADENA, Calif. (WHNT) – Auburn University loses The BCS National Championship against the Florida State Seminoles with a final score of 31-34.

This is the first time in BCS Championship Game history that the team leading at the half did not win the game.

It was a hard-fought game by the Auburn Tigers. The team was in the lead for a majority of the game and the lead changed hands four times. The final time with :13 seconds left in the 4th quarter.

Tre Mason had 195 yards rushing, and Nick Marshall had 14 complete passes for 217 yards. Marshall also had 45 rushing yards.

On the FSU side, Quarterback Jameis Winston completed 20 passes for 237 yards, and had 26 yards rushing.

After the game, FSU Head Coach Jimbo Fisher said: “I said this from Day 1 in spring ball. This is special. They wanted to be an elite team.”

Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn addressed the media after the game. Tre Mason and Dee Ford also answered questions.  Malzahn began by saying: “First of all, I’m very proud of my team, proud of these guys beside me. How far they’ve come from the very first game to getting here. And just being on the brink of winning the whole thing, I’m very proud of them.”

Looking to the future, Malzahn said “We’re going up. The experience that we had and we got most of our guys coming back. Recruiting is going great, and our goal is to get back here. I really believe we’ll do it.”

Tre Mason says he feels as though he “let the whole Auburn Family down tonight by not finishing.”  He says he will decision about leaving Auburn for the NFL. But he says he’s not thinking about that right now.  When pressed further about letting the Auburn Family down, he said “we told them we’d have the biggest turnaround in college football. And the biggest turnaround would be winning that crystal ball. We owed them that because of the season last year. I just want them to know that I gave it all I got, but I still feel like I let them down.”

1st Quarter:

Florida State was the first to strike with a field goal. Roberto Aguayo kicked a 35-yard field goal.  Making the score 0-3.

Auburn scored a touchdown with 3:07 left in the quarter. Nick Marshall completed a 12-yard pass to Tre Mason making the score 7-3.

At the end of the first quarter, the score stands at 7-3.

Auburn had 7 first downs, to FSU’s 3.

Marshall completed 5 passes for 53 yards.  Jameis Winston Completed 4 for 43 yards.

2nd Quarter:

Auburn scores a touchdown quickly in the 2nd. With 13:48 left in the quarter, the score is 14-3.

Shortly after a missed field goal, Auburn got the ball back when FSU fumbled the ball.  During that possession, Marshall ran the ball into the end zone for an Auburn touchdown.  With 5:01 left in the quarter, the score is 21-3.

With 1:28 left in the quarter, Devonta Freeman ran the ball in for a touchdown. With the point after, the score is 21-10.

Halftime Quotes from Coaches:

Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn: “Our defense has played lights out. We missed a couple of opportunities, but in the second half we’re going to try to wear them down.”

Florida State Head Football Coach Jimbo Fisher: “Well, we had to. We lost one (on a fumble), so we had to gain it back. Our kids are ready now.”

3rd Quarter:

Florida state kicks a 41-yard field goal with 6:05 left in the 3rd quarter. The score is 21-13.

4th Quarter:

FSU’s Chad Abram runs into the end zone for a touchdown with 10:55 left in the 4th quarter. After the touchdown, a call of unsportsman-like conduct penalty was called on FSU. The score is AU 21 – FSU 20.

With 4:42 left in the 4th quarter, Auburn’s Cody Parkey kicks a field goal to make it a four-point game. Score: 24-20.

On  the return from the kickoff after the field goal, FSU ran the ball back for a touchdown. Making the score 24-27.

With 1:19 left in the game, Auburn’s Tre Mason runs it into the end zone on a 37-yard run for a touchdown. Auburn recovers the lead with a score of 31-27.

Florida State scores a touchdown with :13 seconds left in the game. Score is now 34-31.

Interesting Statistics:

This game is only the 5th time in the history of BCS games that the first score was a field goal – but it makes four times in the last five games.

The team leading at halftime in BCS title games has won every time.
