Omaha, Neb. – Former Auburn swimmer Eric Shanteau advanced to the 200-meter breaststroke final Thursday night at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials at the CenturyLink Center. Recent graduate Adam Klein finished 11th in the event.
Shanteau, who already clinched a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team with his runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke Tuesday night, posted the second-fastest time in the semifinal heats with a 2:10.14. The 2006 Auburn graduate who currently trains at Southern Cal was the top seed coming into the Trials and is still the American and U.S. Open record-holder in the event.
Klein, who finished his eligibility in 2011 and graduated in December, clocked a time of 2:13.10 –within .03 of his preliminary mark of 2:13.07 – to finish 11th overall. The eighth-place time was 2:12.00.
Shanteau and Klein were the only Auburn competitors in Thursday’s evening session. The 200 breaststroke final will take place Friday night.
Auburn has 16 swimmers entered in Friday’s events, which include the women’s 100 freestyle, men’s 200 backstroke, women’s 200 breaststroke and men’s 200 IM. Prelims get underway at 10 a.m. at the CenturyLink Center.
