“Joy in the Morning” is a stage play, with music, based on a book by Robin Givens and her mother Ruth Givens. Robin Givens says the play is about a woman who loses her faith in God and her belief in life. It tells the story of a young widow who seeks healing through therapy in the wake of her husband’s death. The woman forms a close relationship with her therapist, who may need her as much as she needs him. Neither is aware of the angelic help that leads them both towards healing. “It is about her journey back to herself and her faith in God,” Robin says.
The story was first presented as a dramatic reading at Carnegie Hall with Robin Givens, James Avery, Johnny Gill and gospel singer, Yolanda Adams, participating. Givens later fleshed out the characters and added additional ones. The play has been performed in Bermuda and Canada. In 2015, Givens is doing a national theatre tour. “Joy in the Morning “ will be performed on September 12, at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre in Birmingham, AL with Givens herself directing.
