HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released new crash test results for small cars in what is called the "small overlap crash" category.

These ratings affect your safety and the price you pay for insurance.

A total of 12 small cars were tested.  Six are rated good or acceptable.  The other six are rated marginal or poor.

The top performers are the Honda Civic 2-door, Honda Civic 4-door, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra and Scion TC.

The marginal and poor performing cars were the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, Volkswagen Beetle, Kia Forte, Kia Soul and the Nissan Sentra.

Each car earned a good rating when it comes to front, side, rollover, and rear crashes, which are the typical ones.  This new test, the small overlap, is where you see the difference.  It replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object like a tree or a utility pole.
