Tornado in Fultondale rated at least an EF-3, NWS says


FULTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — Update — Jan. 26, 2021 — 8:20 p.m. —

The Fultondale tornado has been given a rating of EF-3 w/ peak winds around 150 mph, the National Weather Service announced Tuesday evening after Monday night’s storm. The EF-3 damage was focused near Lykes Blvd to New Castle Rd.

At this time, NWS will continue to review and access the damage, but don’t anticipate a change in rating.

Tuesday morning, NWS reported the Fultondale tornado was rate at least an EF-2 with 135 mph wind damage.

NWS survey crews found “high-end EF-2 tornado damage in Fultondale.” This implies that winds reached up to 135 mph.

Most of the EF-2 damage was found north of Walker Chapel Road NE to US Highway 31 and to New Castle Road.

This information is still preliminary and surveys remain ongoing at this time.
