WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says he will change the name of Mount McKinley to Denali. McKinley is well-known as the tallest mountain in North America.

The president will give the mountain its traditional Alaska Native name just before a historic presidential visit to Alaska.

Denali is an Athabascan word that means “the high one.” Alaskans have informally called the mountain Denali for years, and it is somewhat of a sore spot for locals.

Alaska politicians have undertaken several efforts to change the name to Denali, since the mountain was named after former President William McKinley.

President Obama cites the Interior Department’s authority to change the name.

Obama departs Monday for a three-day visit to Alaska, where he will look to focus attention on climate change.
