Wernher Von Braun Leads Huntsville in the Rocket Race

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Before Huntsville became the Rocket City, the town was dominated by fields and agricultural industry. One man's contribution to space exploration changed the face of the town.

During the 1960s, Dr. Wernher Von Braun led the Rocket Race in Huntsville. He helped engineer the Saturn V Rocket and because of his contributions, American astronauts were the first to walk on the moon in 1969.

The Marshall Space Flight Center opened in 1960 with Von Braun as the first director.
