MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Alabama Democratic Party says Judge Robert Vance will stand as the party’s nominee for Chief Justice in November.

“We are thrilled that Judge Vance has stepped forward and will be our candidate for Chief Justice this November,” said Mark Kennedy, chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party. “Judge Vance is an incredibly well-respected judge who will serve us proudly in the upcoming election and, most importantly, serve all the people of Alabama on the court.”

Vance qualified earlier this week, and was the only candidate to do so.  Last Friday, the Alabama Democratic Party disqualified Harry Lyon as its nominee.

“The people of Alabama can feel confident that Judge Vance would lead the court with the rule of law in mind rather than politics,” said Kennedy. “We are proud he is our candidate and the people of Alabama will be proud to have him as Chief Justice.”

Vance is currently a circuit court judge in Jefferson County.  He is married to Joyce White Vance, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.  They have four children.

Judge Vance is the son of Robert Smith Vance, a federal judge who was killed at his Mountain Brook home in 1989 when he opened a package containing a mail bomb.  The federal building and courthouse in Birmingham were renamed the Robert S. Vance Federal Building and United States Courthouse in his memory.
