LINCOLN COUNTY, Tenn. (WHNT) -- Nearly two months have passed since an EF-3 tornado damaged South Lincoln Elementary School.

Administrators expect the building to be ready for students by early August.

But for the teachers of the school, many lost most of their supplies and they are left scrambling to re-stock their classrooms.

"It's devastating," said UAH Director of Education Beth Quick. "Teachers don't have large sums of money to equip their classroom, so to lose all that is a huge loss, a lot of it's personal investment from the teacher."

Joshua Blackburn lives about a mile from the school. The tornado missed his house, but it still hit close to home.

As an education major at UAH, he did his field observation in one of South Lincoln's kindergarten classrooms.

When he learned that each teacher was able to salvage only one small box of supplies from the classrooms, he started raising money to replace what was lost.

"All those teachers have helped me and taught me a lot of things and ways that they didn't have to, so they're very special to me and I wanted to do what little I could to help back," said Blackburn.

UAH also jumped at the chance to help, donating books from the old education building.

Blackburn has already raised more than $4,000. His original fundraising goal was $5,000, but he says he would love to provide South Lincoln with five times that.

"Just to split five thousand dollars between 30 teachers that's still not going to leave them with but a couple hundred dollars and they're going to need much more than that," said Blackburn.

Blackburn plans to divide the money equally among all of the affected teachers.
