COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - Dozens of people across the Tennessee Valley have been reunited with money and property that was rightfully theirs; they just needed a little help finding it.

WHNT News 19 held a taking action event along with the Alabama Unclaimed Property Division.

Through this, a Tuscumbia woman got an unexpected pay day, which she says, couldn't have come at a better time.

Amanda Landers says she cringed when she opened her latest utility bill this week.

“It made a huge difference for me, my central heating and air unit went out in June, so I got a $750 utility bill,” said Landers.

But on that very same day, Landers says she was watching WHNT News 19 and finally decided to give the Alabama State Treasury a call.

According to the Tuscumbia mother, she got a card in the mail about a year ago, but passed it off as a scam.

“I figured they wanted information, so tossed it aside until I saw WHNT News 19 the other night, they were talking about $54 million that belonged to people, so I thought this must be legit,” said Landers.

And it was.  Landers will be getting $1,249.00.  According to Landers, the cash came from a former employer; a place she worked more than five years ago.

“To have $1,300 you weren`t expecting is a huge blessing,” said Landers.  “I was very excited.”

And Landers says after paying off her unexpected bills, there will still be a nice chunk to spend.

“My kids have already decided they are going shopping,” laughed Landers.  “They`ve already divided it amongst themselves.”

Money that was hers to begin with, but money she never knew about.  Now it’s a nice pay out for this mother of two.

You can still check if you have unclaimed cash or property.
