Two Madison County teenagers are safe after being rescued from the Flint River Monday evening.

At about 4:00 p.m., the boys decided to canoe down the river. Two hours later, after missing their rendezvous point, one of their fathers went looking for them.

While the boys were canoeing, they hit a tree in the water which capsized their boat. They ended up on a small island. One of the teenagers swam for the shore. The other was stranded because he didn't know how to swim.

HEMSI and volunteers from Gurley, Central and the Madison County Rescue Squad responded.

At about 11 o'clock, they launched a boat and rescued the boy.

He was reunited with his father.

No one was injured.
