(CNN) – Swimmer Diana Nyad has completed a goal she’s been chasing for 35 years.
Monday, 53 hours after she entered the ocean in Havana, Cuba, she swam onto the beach in Key West, Florida. Hundreds of supporters screamed alongside her as she walked into a friend’s arms and struggled to stand.
“I’ve got three messages,” Nyad said. “One is, we should never, ever give up. Two is, you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is, it looks like a solitary sport but it’s a team.”
The 110-mile swim included cold waters, jellyfish and utter exhaustion.
Nyad’s support team traveled alongside her by boat the entire way.
