(WHNT) –  ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ put up the biggest opening in movie history.

It brought in an estimated $238 million in the US alone. That crushed previous record holder ‘Jurassic World’, which took in $208 million.

It made $517 million around the world since opening overseas Wednesday.

That’s without its opening in China, the world’s second biggest film market. It will open there on January 9th.

Of course, the numbers easily made Star Wars the top box office earner this weekend.

Fox’s ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip,’ was second, with an estimated $14.4 million in ticket sales.
