HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) - A movie shot right here in the Tennessee Valley returned for its big premiere Thursday evening.

Space Warriors was filmed at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in July and August of 2012.

Several of the actors were seeing the film for the first time at the premiere Thursday evening.

"I hope people take away from this film the importance of teamwork, and the importance of knowing that even if you don't know it your family support you and love you, which is the case for my character," said Thomas Horn, who plays Jimmy Hawkins, the film's lead. "He has a strange relationship with his parents but even in the worst times they support him and he's grateful for that."
Space Warriors centers around Hawkins, who dreams of going to Space Camp, and will get there at all costs. It is also about the relationship between Hawkins and his father, a theme you'll find even behind the scenes.
"Sixteen years ago my son, Morgan, who was 9 at the time, said 'Dad, I want to learn how to fly," said Spencer Proffer, an Executive Producer for the film.

Proffer's son attended space camp for eight years, and came back as a counselor after he graduated college. It was only natural Proffer make a movie set in the place where his son grew up and explored his interest in space and science.

Morgan Proffer worked on the film alongside his father as an assistant producer. The two of them see the film as a way to spark a passion for space, science, and math in a new generation.

"I love space, I love science, I love STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). From this movie is a vehicle to promote STEM and the sciences because they are our future," said Morgan.

A copy of the movie has been sent to the crew on the International Space Station.
