HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Shopping trips and dinners with the family were cut short Thursday evening when Madison Square Mall plunged into darkness.

A mall spokesperson says one of the Huntsville Utilities breakers blew out due to a faulty cable. They say it is a routine problem.  Power was restored shortly before 8:00 p.m.

Shoppers were asked to leave the stores and either stay in common areas, lit by emergency lights, or leave the mall.

Those who chose to leave were escorted by mall security with flashlights through the pitch-black parking lot.

Store employees had to turn away customers for the more than two hours the mall was in darkness. Managers stayed behind to make sure merchandise was secure when the power outage prevented them from closing the store gates.

While some customers tried to finish their purchases after the systems were down, mall employees say they were thankful most customers understood the issue and calmly complied when they asked them to evacuate.
