HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Janice Hankins is living a mother’s worst nightmare. Her son, Lonell Hankins, was shot Monday evening in the Shoals. Now she is waiting at Huntsville Hospital, hoping for word he may pull through.

“I had just got back from the emergency room because I was having problems with my knee. The next thing I know the phone rings. At first, I didn’t think anything of it. Then the phone rings again. Next thing I know my child is in the hospital,” said Hankins.

Around 11:30 p.m. Monday, police say shots were fired outside the home of Brioni Rutland’s father.

Investigators say the accused shooter, Gregory Williams, was in his car waiting to talk to the Rutland family.

Gregory Williams is the brother of accused murder suspect Jeremy Williams.  Jeremy is accused of killing Brioni Rutland.

Police say moments later, Janice’s son, Lonell Hankins, pulled up to the home and authorities say he and Gregory Williams started to fight.

Authorities say Lonell Hankins was shot in the chest.

‘I hope this teaches young kids in the street a lesson. I really do. Cause all we doing is killing each other black on black. That’s all we doing,” said Hankins.

Hankins’ son is stable but in critical condition at the Huntsville Hospital.
