COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A Tuscumbia Police Department (TPD) officer was involved in a fatal shooting altercation on Tuesday, authorities confirmed.

Colbert County Coroner Justin Gasque confirmed with News 19 that 64-year-old George Handley was killed in Tuesday night’s shooting.

Police Chief Tony Logan said the shooting happened around 7:45 p.m. at a home on Walker Avenue in Tuscumbia after an hourlong standoff.

Logan also explained that police were called after Handley allegedly threatened family members, adding it “was indicated” he was armed.

Authorities say they had been to the address before in similar circumstances.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will be in charge of the case.

Chief Logan says the officer involved was placed on paid administrative leave.
