LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) - With the popularity of recreational rafting and kayaking growing ever stronger here in north Alabama, thefts of kayaks are growing as well.

When Linda Danielowicz and her husband built their home in Spring Cove they knew it would be a place to entertain family and friends.

In recent years they’ve enjoyed having their grand-kids out to take in all the activities Shoal Creek has to offer.

“They enjoy going kayaking. Going fishing in the kayaks with their grandfather, that`s one of the reasons why we`re really upset by all of this,” said Danielowicz.

What has her so upset is just over a week ago, thieves drove down her neighbors drive-way and stole four kayaks from her storage area.

While the thieves were at it, Danielowicz said they also stole another kayak from her neighbor.

For a week Danielowicz has been posting pictures of her kayaks on social media to help detectives with leads.

After seeing one of her posts, she said a friend was driving down Florence Boulevard and spotted a truck carrying kayaks which fit the description of hers.

“There were two trucks and so that`s how we know it`s a dark blue Dodge 4x4 that was involved in all of this,” stated Danielowicz.

And now she is hoping a tip to the Shoals Area Crime Stoppers will bring those responsible for this theft to justice.

According to the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, up to ten kayaks have been stolen in the Shoal Creek area this boating season.

If you have any information about these thefts call the Shoals Area Crime Stoppers tip line at 256-386-8685.
