FLORENCE, Ala. – The Florence Police Department has arrested and charged a Florence City School staff nurse Tuesday with two felonies for having a sexual relationship with a student.

Lorie Gean Earwood, 45, surrendered to police Tuesday. Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler said Earwood is accused of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old female student. Earwood is charged with two Class B felonies and two Class A misdemeanors alleging she had a sexual relationship with the student.

“Throughout this investigation, the Florence City Schools have been fully cooperative, and swift acting. I can’t emphasize enough that both the school system and the Florence Police Department consider the safety of the children in this community the priority. The disheartening faces of this case withstanding, I commend the school administrators, and our Detectives for their diligence, persistence, and professionalism throughout the investigation,” Tyler said.

He added that although the investigation is ongoing, investigators believe the case is isolated to one staff member and one student.

The identity of the student is being withheld. Earwood is listed as a staff nurse on the Florence City Schools website.
