COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT)  – The Muscle Shoals Police Department became the scene of a death investigation Tuesday morning after an inmate was found unresponsive in the jail.

MSPD Chief Robert Evans says emergency medical crews were immediately called to the city jail but were unable to resuscitate the male inmate.

Wednesday, Chief Evans told media the inmate is 44-year-old Jason Dickerson.

The conditions surrounding his death are yet to be disclosed.

Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley was called to the jail as the death investigation began.

The coroner tells WHNT News 19 the inmate’s family has been notified.

The District Attorney’s Office ordered an autopsy and Utley’s office transported the body to the Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville.

As with normal protocol, a third-party agency will investigate. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is taking over the case.
