TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) - The brother of the man accused of murdering Brioni Rutland in Florence last week is behind bars Tuesday in connection with an overnight shooting that injured a Rutland family member.
According to Tuscumbia Police, Gregory Williams is in custody following a shooting that happened around midnight at the home of Brioni Rutland's father.
Police say Williams was outside the home when Lionel Hankins, a cousin of Rutland, pulled up and the two started fighting.
According to investigators, Williams pulled a gun and shot Hankins, then chased him into the home and shot him again.
Hankins was flown to Huntsville Hospital. Investigators are unsure of his condition at this point.
Florence Police have released the results of a preliminary autopsy in that case. State forensic science experts say Brioni Rutland died from injuries that included being stabbed more than 30 times and a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators say Rutland, 27, was killed inside the Hawthorne Street apartment of Jeremy Williams. Police believe Williams dumped Rutland's body from the old railroad bridge in Sheffield sometime between Tuesday and Thursday of last week.
Divers found his body Friday afternoon, the day after Thanksgiving.
Jeremy Williams is charged with murder. He is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
