COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A nightmarish case from Sheffield has come to a close after the man accused of raping a woman at the Colbert Square Apartments in October of 2013 plead guilty to those charges.

Tavares Terrell Garner plead guilty to one count of Rape 1st, Burglary 1st, and Robbery 1st Thursday afternoon.

Police say Garner forced his way in to a woman’s apartment at the Colbert Square apartments after knocking on two other doors.  Police say he struggled with the woman, then raped her.  Police say after the act, Garner cleaned the crime scene.

Afterward, he forced the woman to come outside, naked, and point to which car was hers. Police say he then stole the car, drove it a few blocks and then deserted it.

Investigators were able to use DNA from the scene and a police sketch to identify Garner as a suspect.

Garner is sentenced to life in prison.
