FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – There’s currently an effort to raise money for a man who needs an electric wheelchair to get around.
From Wood Avenue in Florence to Panama City Beach where John Benson now lives, a hometown church is helping during a time of need.
Benson moved from Florence to start a life with his now fiancé Mandi Haroldson . However, his electric wheelchair broke down. Now, he’s stuck in a nursing home.
“The wheelchair would allow me to get back into the community,” Benson shared. “It would help me when I’d like to be independent.”
So, he created a Facebook page,’Let the Phoenix Rise Again‘, to raise the $1,035 he needs to rebuild the motor.
He also reached out to his hometown to help him get his legs back.
“For John, his legs are his wheelchair,’ said longtime Florence friend Greg McMurtry. “Without those, he’s kind of restricted, to say the least.”
The congregation at Benson’s home town church, Wood Avenue Church of Christ, stepped up. McMurtry said his friend was a longtime member of the church before he moved away.
“He was an inspiration to us,” he said, He always seemed to have a knack to overcome adversity and he was always real strong in his faith.”
So far, they’ve help to raise enough to rebuild the motor. However, they still need an air cushion which is necessary to prevent pressure sores. That will cost around $600 to replace. They still need over $300 to order the new cushion.
“Anything helps, even just $5.00,” Benson said. “I just need to get my legs back.”
