TUSCUMBIA, Ala. – The prosecution of a former Muscle Shoals youth minister charged with rape and sodomy came to an abrupt end Friday morning.  Set to go to trial Monday, Charles Kyle Adcock walked into the courthouse and entered a guilty plea.

One year after being indicted on almost 30 counts of sex crimes against a teen, Adcock pleaded guilty to the first count of his indictment, sodomy second degree, a Class B felony.

Colbert County District Attorney Bryce Graham says the offer was made with two things in mind.

“That keeps her from having to testify in the case.  And also he will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life,” said Graham.

The judge overseeing the case sentenced Adcock to a 10-year prison sentence, split with 15 months to serve in state prison.  He will get credit for time already served and could be eligible for release at the beginning of 2017.

The crimes happened while Adcock was employed as a youth minister at Woodward Avenue Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals from 2010 to 2012.

During the investigation, Muscle Shoals police discovered almost 200,000 text messages between Adcock and the victim over a three-year period.  Investigators say the inappropriate sexual contact started when she was 14.

Graham says the last thing prosecutors wanted to do is expose the victim to reliving that traumatic time period.

“Mainly trying to prevent the victim from having to testify in this case. It would have been horrific on her. It would have been a terrible thing for her to have to endure,” said Graham.

Graham says the victim is now 20 years old.  He says he hopes she and her family can try to move on with their lives.
