Florence Police asking public to stop spreading rumors of violent protests, riots

FLORENCE, Ala. – Police are warning about spreading false reports of violent protests, vandalism, and riots.

Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler issued a message on Facebook Monday night asking people to stop spreading such messages, adding that the protests in the city have been peaceful.

According to the statement, peaceful protests are always welcomed and that the department will protect the first amendment rights of those who choose to do so.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton says people have followed that example since the Civil Rights movement.

“That was because of the leadership in the African-American community and then the political leadership at the time,” said Sheriff Singleton. “And we’ve enjoyed a good working relationship as far as race relations go. We’re not perfect, we have issues, we’re not there where we ought to be but we’ve come a long way.”
