Man Dies After Being Shot By Lauderdale County Deputy

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Authorities say a welfare check in Lauderdale County led to to a shooting Saturday evening.

Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a house in the Underwood community on Saturday night with the claim that a person may be trying to harm himself.

Officials say someone inside the home allegedly came to the door with a gun and a deputy shot the individual. The person, identified as 35-year-old Richard Fontenot, was taken to Eliza Coffee Hospital for treatment where he later died.

The deputy involved in this incident has been placed on administrative leave while the Alabama Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting. This is standard protocol for the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
