A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, June 10 for Dylan Milam, the teenager who was shot last weekend in Colbert County.
The service will be at 2 p.m. at Spry Williams Funeral Home in Florence.
Milam, 14, died Sunday after a friend accidentally shot him.
The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. in the Brick Hatton area on Brick School Road.
Milam was pronounced dead at Helen Keller Hospital.
"This is the most tragic aspect of what can happen if you don't monitor weapons when they're around children," said Colbert County Sheriff Ronnie May.
Milam was a student at Colbert County High School in Leighton. According to Sheriff May, Milam and a 13-year-old friend had spent Sunday target shooting. Just before 9 p.m. the two decided to go back outside.
"From the witnesses that were there, these young men had been playing pool, and they decided to leave and go outside to shoot targets again," said Sheriff May.
According to May, while the two were walking out the back door of the home, the .22-caliber rifle went off, hitting Milam in the neck.
Sheriff May said Milam's body is in Huntsville for an autopsy. The results are expected on Tuesday.
"We'll be getting with the District Attorney and going over all the statements, and see what if anything else we need to do, as far as getting the DA what he needs to make a decision," said May.
