ROGERSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — A man has been charged with arson after police say he set a fire at an apartment complex in Rogersville that sent his child to the hospital.
Rogersville Fire Chief Frankie Phillips told News 19 they received a call to Rogersville Park Apartments at 4:45 a.m. on Sunday. Officials say once they arrived on-scene, the top floor of the eight-unit apartment building was on fire. The blaze extended into the roof.
Rogersville Police Chief Brian Hudson confirmed Jared Lynn Hazelwood, 44, is charged with seven counts of first-degree arson.
Chief Hudson said Hazelwood’s 3-year-old son was rescued from the apartment with burns on his legs and crotch area, and suffering from smoke inhalation. The child was later airlifted to UAB.
Phillips said the fire was out within 20 minutes and all residents were evacuated.
Hazelwood was booked in the Lauderdale County Jail on a $420,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing. Rogersville Police say they expect more charges to be filed against Hazelwood, including attempted murder.
