FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – By the end of 2014, Hillshire Brands and Hon Company will no longer operate in Florence, leaving thousands of people without jobs.

And even though the decision was made on a corporate level, the Shoals area is still a popular destination for businesses.

“We have to be able to show that they can make a profit here. A respectable profit here than anywhere else. If we can do that then we can be successful,” said Forrest Wright, president of the Shoals Economic Development Authority.

Wright believes the success of bring business and corporations to the area is a community effort.

“One of the things that we will do is continue some of the things that have been successful in the past. Until that proves otherwise we will continue to do that. We’ve had some good luck and good success in the last few years,” said Wright.

Part of that success, includes figuring out what businesses need and want. And to do that, Shoals leaders are hiring an industry coordinator to communicate with business leaders and help with the job hiring process.

“We’re going to try to do some activities that might help them move a little quicker in that employment process to take up some of this, some of the opportunities that are out there now,” said Wright.

Wright says in the last decade over two thousand companies have relocated to the Shoals.
